Why celebrate a New Year?

New Year is the occasion where a new calendar year begins and the calendar year grows by one. The ancient Mesopotamians celebrated 12-day-long festival of Akitu on the New Year during the vernal equinox, whereas the Greeks celebrated New Year around winter solstice, on Dec. 20. The Egyptians celebrated another lap around the sun on July 20. In the Roman era, March marked the beginning of the calendar. However, in 46 B.C., Julius Caesar created his own calendar - the Julian calendar, which set the New Year as January 1st which is celebrated even today.

How do people celebrate a New Year?

In New York, you should not miss to make your presence at Times Square where a ball drop occurs from Times Square Ball at 11:59:00 PM which hits the ground exactly at 12:00:00 AM. This is complemented by live performance, music and entertainment.



Chile – In Chile, people eat a spoon of lentils at midnight and put the money at the bottom of their shoes which is supposed to bring them prosperity for the next year.

China – In China, people celebrate the New Year with fireworks that is supposed to ward off evil spirit and they dress in red and give money to their loved ones wrapped in red envelopes.

Cuba – In Cuba, people clean their houses and throw water out of the window as a part of their good luck customs during the New Year. If you are wanderlust, then Cubans believe that if you circle your house with a suitcase in your hand when the clock strikes 12 at New Year’s eve, then the new year will bring travel opportunities.

Denmark – Denmark has a different tradition of celebrating the New Year. The people of Denmark smash and break plates and glasses against their houses as a part of their New Year celebration.

Russia – In Russia, people write down their wishes, burn it down to ashes, dissolve the ashes in a champagne and drink it down to make sure they stick to their wishes and aspirations.

South Africa – If you are walking on the streets of South Africa, you might want to watch out for old furniture and appliances as they are thrown out of houses during New Year.

India – In India, people adore themselves with colorful clothes and visit friends and families with activities such as singing, playing games, dancing.
